                                   My Story

---

When I was choosing my career path, I knew I wanted to become the role model I always longed for. Growing up in the inner city of Houston, Texas, my days weren’t always filled with sunshine. But my mom did her best to shield me from the darkness by keeping me busy with sports. From the age of five until after I gave birth to my son, sports were the only world I knew. They were my identity, my escape, my everything. But it wasn’t until I had to re-enroll at the University of Houston-Downtown that I truly faced the reality of my life. Suddenly, it was no longer just about me—I had a son to raise. And with that shift came the painful realization that sports could no longer define me.

The turning point came when I made what I thought was the "biggest mistake" of my career—being overlooked after not being invited back to speak at my high school, where I had once been celebrated as one of the greatest female athletes. That moment shattered me. I distanced myself from the world, feeling lost and alone, unable to see a way forward. But it was through that darkness that I found my why. It was through that struggle that I discovered who I was outside of the jersey, outside of the court, outside of the label.

I began my first internship at Marshall Elementary, working with Tier-1 students during the summer. Their stories mirrored my own—young souls trying to find their place in a world that didn’t always seem to have space for them. That experience changed everything for me. I realized I no longer wanted to be defined by the sports I played, but by the woman I had become through embracing my struggles. The woman who faced loss, uncertainty, and fear, but still found the strength to rise.

For so long, I didn’t believe I was smart enough, or capable enough to have a life outside of sports. Many of my fellow student-athletes weren’t strong enough to overcome those changes and tragically turned to dangerous paths, or worse, gave up entirely. But for me, pushing through and finishing my education became the greatest decision of my life.

I now want to inspire others to break free from the limiting belief that they are only defined by the sport they play. I want young girls and boys to know that they are so much more than what others see on the field or court. They are their own story, full of depth and possibility. And no matter the struggles they face, they have the power to choose a future that’s uniquely their own.
